About Zombies

I have to admit it, Zombies have reached a point of over saturation within our current culture. Everywhere you look, there are zombies in the media. They are literally everywhere. But I still have something to say.

Origins
I’ve been in love with anything supernatural for as long as I can remember. When I was four, I begged my parents for a magic set. As I grew older, I would stay in to watch magic shows. I wanted to go to Hogwarts, long before the movies came out. But when it came to anything related to horror, I was a child who needed desperately to be saved. I would stay up late at night, unable to sleep as the images of the terror flashed through my mind. At nine, I watched Return of the Living Dead (dir. Dan O’Bannon) and nearly shit my pants. I remember running back to my house and not sleeping for the next two weeks. If I heard a dog bark for the next four years, the restless sleep would come back (although it exposed me to Lupin the Third and Ghost in the Shell).

Turning Point
I don’t know what happened, or why, but one day I couldn’t get enough of zombies. Maybe it was a strange glutton for punishment mentality, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep and still watched. Books, movies, comics, video games, if it had a zombie in it, I consumed it.

What I love about zombies
A zombie symbolizes the emptiness of the human. Plenty of people have pointed out that Zombies are much different than Vampires or Weres because they are mindless. What is truly intriguing about a zombie is their bug like quality. They are everywhere. They move through life and no matter where you go, it is hard to avoid them. A great zombie makes me feel helpless, but not scared.

I have a lot of reasons to love zombies, but they are over saturated at this point. I’ll continue to consume zombie media and will love every second. But I recognize the general public will grow weary of the zombie trend. It will cycle back in time, but I’m ready for their impending demise.

In honor of zombies and perhaps a bit too late to ride their wave of popularity, I have a story I want to share with the world. In fact, It is a novel. A zombie novel entitled Life in A Wasteland. I’ll be posting it in pieces, small pieces. It’ll start appearing on July 15th, 2013.
