I debated for a while whether I was going to post about this. The thoughts kept rolling around in my mind, until I finally decided that I was going to give in.
It was announced that a Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is on it’s way. It will be a Warner film and the script will be written by J.K. Rowling herself. The story will follow the writer of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt Scamander. It will be set 70 years before Harry’s Story.
I’m certain there are a number of whys rolling around in your heads along with the excitement or indifference. As to why there is another movie at all, comes down to money. The Harry Potter series has been one of the biggest cash cows for Warner in recent years. The films bring in money and every production company wants to bring in money. They’ve had some flops and retreading the Wizarding World is a far safer bet than experimenting with yet another new series.
Some of you may be wondering why J.K. would allow her series to be reentered, considering how adamant she’s been about not expanding Harry’s story. And there lies the key to the answer. Harry’s story is over and J.K. has no urge to beat a dead horse and destroy what she’s created by adding more. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is not about Harry. It is about Newt. By doing this, J.K. is able to delve back into the world without tarnishing Harry’s story.
Using this textbook addendum as the basis for a new film and possibly series is brilliant. However, it wouldn’t have been possible if J.K. hadn’t built her world so thoroughly. She has a landmine of information about various characters and aspects of the Wizarding World. She has made it come to life to the point many people wish they could be a part of it. J.K. didn’t just create a world for the story to reside, she created a world for people to dream.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was simply a textbook that Harry, Ron, and Hermione used during their time at Hogwarts. The book describes an array of creatures. The book was published in our world in 2001, replicating the copy the trio used with annotations along the sides. The book opens with a preface written by Albus Dumbledore, which may suggest his possible inclusion in the film. Although, I hope that isn’t the case.
What this all means
This step is great for fans of the Wizarding World. It reopens the door to the world that we love and to make it even better, it is still in the hands of the beloved creator. Her devotion and dedication to the world is tremendous. Her involvement is encouraging and shows how much she does care about the world. This expansion allows her to work with the world we all love and still get to explore new characters to keep anything from getting stale.
With the development of this project, it opens doors for other characters in the universe as well. We now have the possibility to explore some of the characters that only get a mention in various eras. Maybe we could get a story of someone from a Famous Wizards and Witches card. What is most important to me is that I’m being allowed to reenter the Wizarding World. I couldn’t ask for anything better.
What are your thoughts on the expansion of the universe? Who might you be excited to see?
