Earlier the press was informed that FOX’s Sleepy Hollow would be returning for a season 2. It was a surprising announcement for a network station. Most networks will pick up shows for a final 9 episodes to extend a season to 22 episodes. That was the normal path, until today. Season 1 of Sleepy Hollow will remain a 13 episode season. The now confirmed Season 2 of the popular show will also be 13 episodes.
Personally, I am excited to hear this news as Sleepy Hollow has proved to be one of my favorite shows so far this season. But bypassing the back 9 order is raising red flags. Are networks starting to enter the realm of shorter seasons like their cable counter parts? I am all for this shift. As a viewer, I have a preference for 13 episode seasons. I don’t feel rushed like a 6 episode order, but the plot gets to play out naturally without milking it and adding unnecessary filler. Not only that, but shorter seasons mean the actors have more time to go off and work on other projects. This gives the actors time to recharge and we as an audience have a better opportunity of having shows that run longer.
Are you as excited as I am about the renewal of Sleepy Hollow? Would you mind if network TV adopted shorter seasons universally?
