Paul Rudd may be playing Ant-Man in Edgar Wright’s upcoming Ant-Man film, but so will Michael Douglas. You heard right. There were suspicions that Rudd’s depiction of Ant-Man was going to be Scott Lang, but now we have confirmation that is so. Scott Lang in the comics took the Ant-Man mantle from the originator of the technology, Hank Pym. Both men are intelligent, but in very differnt ways. Scott Lang is a good man driven to a crime to save his daughter. While, Marvel may not go the route of adding in a daughter to Ant-Man, I’d be surprised if they changed his origin too drastically as it makes for a different yet believable origin than the other characters they have in their arsenal.
But while Scott Lang is going through his craziness to step into the Ant-Man role, it is reassuring to know that Hank Pym isn’t going to be left out of the story. With Douglas stepping in to play Pym we will still be able to maintain some of the story that we know of the comics. For a brief moment, it seemed that Hank Pym was going the way of the wind. With Pym gone we’d lose another supergenuis character that was part of the original Avengers.
With Douglas stepping in as Hank Pym, we know that we are going to be seeing the older Hank Pym. Edgar Wright has even suggested that he envisioned the movie with a flashback to a young Hank Pym as Ant-Man. It’s an interesting way to go for the film which would suggest that there would be three people playing Ant-Man in one film. As for the flashback to the past, there are new rumors about that Michael Pena (End of Watch and American Hustle) is in talks for a role in the film. The rumors suggest that Pena will be the villain of the flashback, which will involve him being some sort of Cuban leader named “Castillo”.
The upcoming Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, includes the sentient robot of the title, Ultron. In the comics, Ultron was created by our lovely Hank Pym. the movie seems to be going the route that it was Marvel’s golden boy Tony Stark that is Ultron’s creator. It is a logical step when Tony Stark and Bruce Banner are the only geniuses left. My new question is will Douglas be making an appearance as Hank Pym in Avengers 2, even if just as a cameo?
And just when you thought the Ant-Man casting rumors were over, there are also reports that Rashida Jones and Bryce Dallas Howard are being considered as potentials for the role of Jane van Dyne (aka Wasp).
What do you think about the latest developments in the casting of Ant-Man? How do you think Michael Douglas will approach playing Hank Pym?
