Guardians of The Galaxy First Trailer Released

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, we saw the first full trailer of Marvel’s upcoming film Guardians of the Galaxy. For most people outside of the realm of comics, and even many who are active comic readers, the Guardians of the Galaxy is new. A fresh IP is exciting, but with a talking raccoon and giant sentient tree amongst a landscape of aliens, it can be disorienting. Not to mention the Guardians of the Galaxy have been around long enough to have solid histories in place, making the view looking in even more daunting. Never fear, I’m here to not only dissect the trailer, but fill you in on some Guardians back story.

Let’s be honest, I was extremely excited for the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer. Marvel’s choice to go with a lesser known, and space opera like comic with some crazy alien characters was an interesting choice. Not to mention Marvel enlisted James Gunn the creator of the quirky and dark super to direct the film. The trailer had a dark humor to it that should keep the film entertaining. For a film that is entirely about aliens and set in far away places, it would be a snore fest if it took itself too seriously. As the first trailer, it went through introductions for each of the characters. It utilized the usual suspects type line up that has been teased since comic con of last year. Each character got a moment to shine. The jokes were abundant in the short trailer, but it didn’t shy away from showing some action. Since this trailer is rated PG, I imagine it will draw a lot of people in who want to see what this ragtag teams is actually about. Ultimately the trailer focused on the humor related to this misfit gang and the action the film promises. Considering all the different action clips in the trailer, it seems like we’ll be in for a fun ride.

Who Are They

The team consists of five characters: Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket Racoon. The leader of the team is Starlord who is played by Chris Pratt in the film. Starlord’s real name is Peter Quill and he is the son of Meredith, a human and learns his father is Jason of Sparta, emperor of the Spartoi. Yes, Starlord is half alien. The good news is his father is also one of the good guys, even using the Starlord mantle. Before he stumbled on the rest of the crew, Starlord was a NASA astronaut. The Guardians of the Galaxy exist because of Starlord who rounded up the others to help protect the galaxy.

Gamora is sole survivor of her race. A mass genocide was committed against her people, the Zen Whobaris. She was raised by the villain, Thanos (who we briefly saw at the end of Avengers). She was raised to be a warrior and became an excellent fight. Those skills were enhanced by Thanos through experimentation. He also programmed her not to register the terrible acts she committed as evil. As a result, while she fights for good, her first concern is self preservation. Gamora is being played by Zoe Saldana.

Drax The Destroyer

Drax The Destroyer

Drax the Destroyer may not sound like a name for a good guy, but he definitely is. Born in Burbank California, Arthur Douglas was a real estate agent with a wife and a daughter until His life crossed the paths of Thanos and Chronos. Rather than die from a fatal accident (which killed his wife and resulted in his daughter being abducted), his soul was caught and he was given a humanoid body. Unfortunately his memories were erased in the process. For a long time Drax was driven to destroy Thanos at all costs and when Thanos wasn’t around he languished. Drax is being played by David Bautista.

Groot was the monarch of his home plant, Planet X. There lived the Flora Colossus. If you haven’t figured it out, Groot is a massive sentient tree. In the comics, his gimmick was his inability to say any words other than “I Am Groot”. The gentle and highly intelligent giant wasn’t always this way. As a giant tree, it is difficult to kill him as he is capable of respawning himself from the smallest fraction. Unfortunately, Groot has been exploded one too many times and his ability to speak has dwindled. Now that he’s no longer able to say anything else, each “I am Groot” comes with a very different meaning. Groot will be voiced by Vin Diesel.

Rocket Raccoon

Rocket Raccoon

Rocket Raccoon is the final member of the team and don’t mistake him as some cuddly raccoon. While he may look adorable, he has the mouth of a sailor and isn’t exactly family friendly. Rocket is the epitome of the good guy who is rough around the edges (think Wolverine). Rocket was actually a genetically engineered to be sentient partner to people on a foreign planet. Despite his grizzly personality he manages to keept the team together with a proper dose of reality. Rocket Raccoon will be voiced by Bradley Cooper.
