What Captain America: The Winter Soldier Means for Agents of SHIELD

The events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier completely changed the landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of the biggest effected areas was SHIELD who was founded with the seeds of HYDRA growing within and expanding over time. With SHIELD effectively destroyed, the organization is complete disarray as remaining HYDRA agents are struggling for control against the good guys. That means the entire world for our SHIELD team is going to become even more twisted and complicated.

Dissolution of SHIELD
SHIELD has been destroyed thanks to Cap ad friends and the result is a fractured organization. With the entire organization that our main characters are part of no longer in a proper existence its curious as to where and what the show will do next. Thankfully, the show runners knew exactly what was coming and were able to prepare. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s part of the reason that the title of the show became Agents of SHIELD. Because no matter whether they were current agents or not, the title could still apply. Considering our team was very tied to Nick Fury and often went rogue off the beaten path that SHIELD prescribes, I would be very surprised if our team didn’t work on their own at least for a while.

The executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurisa Tanchereon have already hinted that at least one of our team will betray the team. With HYDRA a rampant threat that had infected SHIELD to its core, it’s unsurprising that there would be at least one person on the team that they trusted that turned out to be nasty. There are a lot of people pointing their fingers at May. However, after the blatant display of subterfuge, I’d be very surprised if she was the one who was working with HYDRA. May has been feeding information to an unknown source, that even she doesn’t seem to know who it is. I wouldn’t be surprised if this information was being funneled to Nick Fury as all the information was about Coulson and Skye post injection. It seems she’s clearly monitoring how the treatment was effecting them.

Turn, Turn, TurnThere is also a sect of people who believe that Fitz is in fact the HYDRA plant. The reasoning behind this idea is solid. Of everyone on the team FitzSimmons are the ones we know the least about. Fitz has also been portrayed as someone who can become cold when pushed in the direction and is willing to do some things he isn’t quite qualified for. It could make perfect sense if Fitz’s aloofness was a trait of him hiding that he was in fact HYDRA. He’s amiable so he doesn’t raise suspicion and he’s quick to help. Which makes him ideal for not catching anyone’s eye. I, however, believe that Simmons is in fact our mole. Out of everyone in the crew we know the least about Simmons. Aside from her enthusiasm, she is a blank slate unlike Fitz. Combine that with Simmons determination to find out exactly what is going on with the serum that was used on Coulson and Skye. Despite orders to drop the research and lay low, she’s been plowing forward. Nothing seems to make her want to stop. It just so happens that the serum, if figured out exactly what it does could be used for further HYDRA experimentation.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if both Fitz and Simmons were both HYDRA plants.

Arnim Zola

The Clairvoyant
There are a lot of people buzzing about who the Clairvoyant actually is. By the end of the last episode, “End of the Beginning“, it was fairly clear that Tom Nash was not the Clairvoyant. Our team was able to piece together that the Clairvoyant wasn’t in fact clairvoyant, but has access to high level SHIELD intel. Intel that had limitations. My theory is that the Clairvoyant is actually the algorithm that Arnim Zola created and we learned about in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The algorithm was described as a being able to decipher when exactly people would die based on datamined information from their past and present. This allows them to be able to predict the future, thus coming off as clairvoyant. Top off the fact that Arnim Zola was working within SHIELD with high level access to all of SHIELD’s intel makes me believe that it was this algorithm that was actually the Clairvoyant that we’ve been pondering about for the past season. The signs seem to point to Arnim Zola being the Clairvoyant or at least creating what is the Clairvoyant.

How do you think Agents of SHIELD will change after the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier? What are you looking forward to?
