I promise this will be the last post related to Marvel films at least until The Amazing Spider-Man 2 comes out May 2nd. I’ve talked about the clues left behind in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I’ve also talked about how Agents of SHIELD could be effected and then reviewed the episode in question, “Turn, Turn, Turn”. The only thing I haven’t really talked about is what Captain America The Winter Soldier means for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. The events in the film have completely altered the way the universe will move forward.
We all know that after the events of the film, SHIELD is in shambles. With pretty much all high level agents either HYDRA or dead the structure of SHIELD simply isn’t there. Coulson is currently the highest ranked SHIELD agent that could carry on with SHIELD. Unfortunately, his existence is still unknown to the majority of the organization. To the world Phil Coulson is dead, just like Nick Fury. Both men could step up and lead, but with bigger things on Nick’s place it will fall to Coulson. That means information will need to be revealed. When Black Widow dumped all of SHIELD’s secrets onto the internet, it is possible that Coulson being alive was one of them. It’s also possible that it wasn’t as it was information that was hidden by Nick Fury himself. No matter who is stepping up to try to get SHIELD back on track, they are going to go against steep odds. HYDRA decimated SHIELD and what is left is being desperately grabbed at by various entities.
The scariest result of SHIELD’s demise is the lack of government organized protection from non-standard threats. SHIELD was an intelligence agency. However, they specialized in the more unique potential threats. It was SHIELD who was on the scene when Mjolnir landed on earth. It was SHIELD that recruited Captain America after he awoke in present times. It was SHIELD that assembled the Avengers to fight the Chitauri. With SHIELD out of the way, our heroes don’t have any regulatory force that are breathing down their necks trying to protect normal people. Essentially, the world is now essentially free reign with no organized opposition or control.
The Avengers were assembled by Nick Fury. He keeps the team on track and working together. Sure, he doesn’t have too much control over a band of super heroes that all have their own agendas. But when it comes to these missions he keeps them on point, which is vital. We know that the Avengers will unite again in the second Avengers film, Avengers: Age of Ultron, but we don’t know what sort of state it will be in. Nick Fury is on the run, continuing on with the business he was doing at SHIELD. Captain America is now on a desperate search to find and help Bucky (aka The Winter Soldier). Black Widow is currently going underground to re-establish a new identity now that all of her covers are blown. It isn’t clear whether Falcon will join up with the Avengers later on, but reports indicate that for now he won’t be in the second Avengers film. After the events in Iron Man 3, Tony Stark has hung up his suit. However, Maria Hill was seen at Stark Industries in a lie detector test, for yet unknown reasons. Hawkeye, another SHIELD agent was no where to be seen as SHIELD was taken down, but apparently his absence will be clear in Age of Ultron. Thor is off getting some lady love on Midgard after Asgard was nearly destroyed by Malekith. Pretty much, our Avengers team is scattered with their own business and SHIELD is no longer around to clean up some of the messes.
Age of Ultron
While we don’t know a whole lot about what is actually going to go down in Avengers: Age of Ultron, we do know a few things. The most obvious is that it will focus on Ultron. For those who don’t know Ultron is a sentient robotic force that was initially created by Hank Pym (aka Ant-Man). Unlike his creator, Ultron is not benevolent but essentially wants to shape and rule the world as he sees fit. His hyper intelligence makes him a strong force to reckon with and even the destruction of his body often doesn’t result in his total destruction. He is code after all.
The film will take a different stance with the creation of Ultron, considering that Ant-Man won’t be introduced until after Age of Ultron. The likely creator will be Tony Stark who’s the only other person who could potentially fill that role. Ultron doesn’t seem to be the only character that will make an appearance either. Paul Bettany, the voice of Jarvis, was cast as the Vision. The Vision was initially a creation of Ultron, but he eventually became a hero who married Scarlet Witch. Oh and yes, Scarlet Witch and her brother Quicksilver will also be in the film. At the end of The Winter Soldier we saw a short bit with these two characters. Ultimately, Age of Ultron will serve as a film to reunite our disparate Avengers and also wreck the Marvel Cinematic Universe even further.
What do you think is the most distressing thing going on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
