The New Shows

Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris

Official Synopsis:Five-time Emmy Award winner Neil Patrick Harris is coming to NBC on a new primetime variety series based on the U.K.’s hugely popular “Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.” The show will feature comedy sketches, musical numbers, mini game shows, hidden camera pranks on celebrities and appearances by A-list stars. Harris, who has served as an Emmy and Tony Award host and was recently announced as host of the 2015 Academy Awards, will bring his multi-dimensional skills to the forefront of this new hour-long series. Harris recently co-starred in David Fincher’s “Gone Girl,” and finished a run on Broadway as the lead in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” for which he won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. For nine seasons he played the role of Barney Stinson on “How I Met Your Mother,” for which he received four Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations.
Format:One Hour Variety
Cast: Neil Patrick Harris
Initial Impressions: I like Neil Patrick Harris. I’m not the biggest fan of variety shows. I’m not sure how many people are clamoring for variety shows. However, they are a rarity now. That may bode well for it. I know I’ll check it out at least once.

Blindspot

Official Synopsis:A vast international plot explodes when a beautiful Jane Doe is discovered naked in Times Square, completely covered in mysterious, intricate tattoos with no memory of who she is or how she got there. But there’s one tattoo that is impossible to miss: the name of FBI agent Kurt Weller, emblazoned across her back. “Jane,” Agent Weller and the rest of the FBI quickly realize that each mark on her body is a crime to solve, leading them closer to the truth about her identity and the mysteries to be revealed. From Executive Producer Greg Berlanti (“The Mysteries of Laura,” “The Flash,” “Arrow”).
Format:One Hour Drama
Cast: Jaimie Alexander, Sullivan Stapleton
Initial Impressions: This trailer really caught me as something that was really interesting. The show seems intense. The woman dubbed Jane is mysterious and dangerous. This seems like it could potentially be a really interesting show, however the set up makes the show finite. The premise should not extend. I can’t imagine this show going successfully beyond three seasons. That said, it is a show I actually do want to tune in to. Not to mention I love Jaimie Alexander.

Chicago Med

Official Synopsis:Executive producer Dick Wolf delivers the newest installment of the compelling Chicago franchise, an emotional ride through the day-to-day chaos of the city’s most explosive hospital and the courageous team of doctors that holds it together. They will tackle unique new cases inspired by topical events, forging fiery relationships in the pulse-pounding pandemonium of the emergency room, and through it all, familiar faces from the Chicago Police and Fire departments will intertwine as this third team of Chicago heroes hits the ground running.
Format: One Hour Drama
Cast:
Initial Impressions: There is no trailer for this one. Does it really need one. NBC is growing their Chicago line. We know the setting, Med implies it’ll be a medical show and it just adds to this world being created. Provided that people want to watch a medical show, there will likely be an audience. It’s a relatively safe bet for NBC and that’s something they need.

Coach

Official Synopsis:Craig T. Nelson reprises the iconic role that earned him an Emmy Award in this follow-up to the beloved series that ran for nine unforgettable seasons. With original creator Barry Kemp at the helm, our story picks up 18 years later, when the retired coach gets back in the game to assist his son, who was just hired as head coach at an Ivy League university in Pennsylvania… where they know nothing about sports. Between dealing with the eggheads on campus and his hostile daughter-in-law at home, Coach will soon learn that he’s not in Minnesota anymore. Talk about a Hail Mary!
Format:
Cast: Craig T Nelson
Initial Impressions: Bringing it back to the old days, Coach is returning. Again, this is a safer bet for NBC as it will bank on some serious nostalgia.

Coat of Many Colors

Official Synopsis:

Initial Impressions:

Crowded

Official Synopsis:No more sex, booze and paying the bills naked. After 20 years of parenting, empty nesters Mike (Patrick Warburton, “Seinfeld”) and Martina (Carrie Preston, “True Blood”) are finally reclaiming their wild side. But when both of their two grown daughters unexpectedly move back in and Mike’s parents scratch their plans to spend their golden years in Florida, their roost is full again. From Executive Producer Sean Hayes, this new (and very timely) family comedy proves that life is crazy with a full house, especially the second time around.
Format: Half Hour Comedy
Cast: Patrick Warburton, Carrie Preston
Initial Impressions: I like Carrie Preston. This premise however doesn’t seem like one that I’m in love with. This is the kind of show I would expect to fail. However, if the characters are great enough, the premise is broad enough to support it long term.

Emerald City

Official Synopsis:In the blink of a tornado’s eye, 20-year-old Dorothy Gale and her K9 police dog are transported to another world, one far removed from our own – a mystical land of competing kingdoms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy. This is the fabled Land of Oz in a way you’ve never seen before, where wicked witches don’t stay dead for long and a young girl becomes a headstrong warrior who holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands.
Format: One Hour Drama
Cast:
Initial Impressions: I thought it was canceled. I guess it’s still on the table. We’ll see if it makes it on air this year.

Game of Silence

Official Synopsis:Carol Mendelsohn, executive producer and architect of the “CSI” phenomenon, presents a gripping new drama about a successful Atlanta attorney (David Lyons, “Revolution”) whose long-lost childhood friends unexpectedly reappear after 25 years. When a dark secret they thought they’d buried resurfaces, the brotherhood bands together to right the wrongs of their shared past – a journey that will push the limits of their loyalty and quench their thirst for revenge.
Format:One Hour Drama
Cast:
Initial Impressions: Not exactly a show I’m biting to get at. That said, I haven’t seen any of it so I won’t be too harsh a judge.

Heartbreaker

Official Synopsis:Based on the real life and achievements of Dr. Kathy Magliato, this unique character-driven medical drama follows Dr. Alex Panttiere (Melissa George, “The Slap”), an outspoken, world-renowned heart transplant surgeon, one of the few women in her field. Stubborn and fearless, Alex always operates on her own terms. She revels in a racy personal life that’s a full-time job in itself, manages the daily demands of skeptical faculty and dutiful interns, and pushes the boundaries of medical science to impressive new heights.
Format: One Hour Drama
Cast:Melissa George
Initial Impressions: No. I don’t see this going very far. It doesn’t have a unique twist. I doubt that both this and Chicago Med will survive. However, my guess it this will be the first to fall to the wayside. That’s a shame because the trailer gives the appearance that Alex is a tough chick. However, it seems to put the entire show on her shoulders rather than a cast and that could be either a benefit or detriment. Only time will tell.

Heroes Reborn

Official Synopsis:The saga behind the 2006 breakout series “Heroes” will continue this fall as creator Tim Kring returns to the fold and develops new layers to his original superhero concept.

This highly anticipated 13-episode event series will reconnect with the basic elements of the show’s first season, where ordinary people were waking up to the fact that they had extraordinary abilities.

Original cast member Jack Coleman will reprise his role as H.R.G., Jimmy Jean-Louis returns as The Haitian, and Masi Oka will be back as Hiro Nakamura. Also joining the cast are Zachary Levi (of NBC’s “Chuck” and the Marvel franchise “Thor”), Ryan Guzman (“The Boy Next Door”), Robbie Kay (“Once Upon a Time”), Danika Yarosh (“Shameless”), Judith Shekoni (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2”), Kiki Sukezane (“Death Yankee 3”), Henry Zebrowski (NBC’s “A to Z”) and Gatlin Green (“Criminal Minds”).

With the return of “Heroes Reborn,” NBC will launch a digital series prior to the premiere that will introduce new characters and storylines that will take the “Heroes” phenomenon to new places. NBC’s digital platforms, as well as Hulu and video-on-demand, will debut the online prequel to the series prior to the show’s premiere.

Tim Kring, Peter Elkoff and James Middleton will serve as executive producers.

Produced by Imperative Entertainment, in association with Universal Television, “Heroes Reborn” will air in fall 2015 on NBC.
Format:One Hour Drama
Cast:
Initial Impressions: Heroes, enough said. People will watch if only to see if it can recapture the feeling it had in it’s first season.

Hot & Bothered

Official Synopsis:If you think the steamy sex, sensational scandals and heart-wrenching heartbreak on Latino soap operas are a little extreme, just wait until you see what happens behind the scenes! Eva Longoria stars in this new comedy about Ana Sofia, a sizzling TV superstar, and her lively family of cast and crew all competing to steal the spotlight. When the cameras turn off, the drama turns up as Ana battles pesky network execs, drunken scriptwriters, narcissistic co-stars and an unfortunately familiar new on-screen love interest.
Format: Half Hour Comedy
Cast:
Initial Impressions: You know how shows can live or die based on their titles alone. I’m afraid that this one might end up being one of those shows.

People are Talking

Official Synopsis:If you can think it, they will say it. From the producer of “Ride Along” and the director of “How I Met Your Mother” comes this unabashed new comedy about two diverse couples, who are both neighbors and best friends. As they go through life side by side, they can’t help but analyze and obsess about EVERYTHING. From topics like sex and race, to the fact that the trusted new babysitter might just be a porn star, nothing is out of bounds for this wildly outspoken foursome.
Format: Half Hour Comedy
Cast: Mark-Paul Gosselear, Tone Bell, Bresha Webb
Initial Impressions: Of all the comedy trailers, this one made me laugh the most. At least so far. Meaghan Rath will be replaced as she is going to be on Fox’s The Guide to Surviving Life. That said, she had the least laughs in this trailer and maybe her recasting isn’t the worst thing. That said, I get the feeling if one of those two shows will last it’ll be the latter. he’s to hoping that when they recast Meaghan Rath it will remain a woman of color.

The Player

Official Synopsis:
Format: One Hour Drama
Cast: Wesley Snipes, Philip Winchester, Charity Wakefield
Initial Impressions: The trailer seemed more movie like. The more I thought about it I could slowly imagine it as a show. However, it has a very unique premise. As such, I don’t think this show will do well if it is stretched for long seasons. It will become too much overdone. If the show can be kept to short seasons and it is interesting it could fill an action TV void similar to 24.

The Reaper

Official Synopsis:
Format:
Cast:
Initial Impressions:

Shades of Blue

Official Synopsis:In a steamy new drama, the iconic Jennifer Lopez stars as sexy New York detective and single mother Harlee Santos, who fell in with a tight-knit group of dirty cops, taking bribes and protection money that she uses to provide the best life for her honest, talented daughter. But when she’s trapped by the FBI and forced to inform on her own “brothers,” she’ll have to walk the fine line between love, loyalty, honor and betrayal, and try to keep it together for her daughter’s future.

From Oscar-winning Director and Executive Producer Barry Levinson (“The Humbling,” “Wag the Dog,” “Homicide: Life on the Street”).
Format: Hour Long Drama
Cast: Jennifer Lopez
Initial Impressions: No trailer, no impression.

Superstore

Official Synopsis:America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty”) and Ben Feldman (“Mad Men,” “A to Z”) star in a hilarious workplace comedy (from the producer of “The Office”) about a unique family of employees at a super-sized mega store. From the bright-eyed newbies and the seen-it-all veterans to the clueless summer hires and the in-it-for-life managers, together they tackle the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions.
Format:
Cast: America Ferrera, Ben Feldman
Initial Impressions: This is the kind of show that could capture an audience. With the absence of many workplace comedies aside from Brooklyn Nine-Nine this could be a show that hits the niche. That said, I’m surprised they are going for it. Then again without have The Office, Community, or Parks and Rec any more, maybe they are trying to hit what they know will have a loyal fanbase when most of their comedies have been failing.

The Wiz Live

Official Synopsis: It’s The Wiz Live.
Format: Live event
Cast:
Initial Impressions: These live shows do decent numbers for them.

You,Me, And The End of the World

Official Synopsis:In this bold, adrenaline-fueled new comedy drama, the news that a comet is on an unavoidable collision course with Earth sets in motion the most hilariously unexpected chain of events imaginable. Set against the backdrop of apocalyptic chaos and starring Rob Lowe (“Parks and Recreation”), Jenna Fischer (“The Office”), Megan Mullally (“Will & Grace”) and Mathew Baynton (“Yonderland”), the story follows an eclectic group of seemingly unconnected characters around the world as their lives start to intersect in the most unexpected ways. And when we say “eclectic,” we mean a rebellious priest, an unhinged white supremacist, a mild-mannered bank manager, a germophobic cyber-terrorist and an American five-star general. Some of these misfits are destined to make it to a bunker deep beneath the English suburb of Slough, and as a result will become the hugely unlikely (and totally unsuitable) future of mankind. Wouldn’t that be a disaster!
Format: Half Hour Comedy
Cast: Rob Lowe, Jenna Fischer, Megan Mullally, Mathew Baynton
Initial Impressions: No trailer, no impression.

What NBC shows are you looking forward to most? Which do you think will make it? And what about those trailers?
