I don’t listen to music when I read. However when I saw that this week’s Tuesday Talks topic was “If you could throw together a soundtrack for your favorite book, what songs would you choose?” I had to give it a go. Not because I had a soundtrack in mind for my favorite book. Instead because I realized that as soon as I thought of my favorite book and it’s characters songs just started popping into my head. Sure, some of these songs may conflict with what Pierce Brown has said helped inspire those characters, but some certainly do match.
Yes, I am here and now declaring that Red Rising is my favorite series ever. Yes, it is barely inching out Harry Potter (only just and I get the feeling if you ask tomorrow it may be different). As such I’m not going to pick one single book, but the entire trilogy.
“Like A Stone” by Audioslave
“Successful” by Drake (Darrow)
“Stars of CCTV” by Hard-Fi (Darrow)
“Enter Sandman” by Metallica (Sevro)
“Fatal” by RZA (Ragnar)
“World Town” by MIA (Victra)
“Bad Girls” by MIA (Victra)
“Galvanize” by The Chemical Brothers
“Mediocrity Gets You Pears” by Against Me!
“Monster” by Kanye West featuring Jay Z, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Bone Iver (Antonia)
“Tennis Courts” by Lorde (Sefi)
“Fuck You” by Lily Allen (Eo)
“Hard out Here” by Lily Allen (Mustang)
“Better Man” by James Morrison (For a couple I won’t spoil)
“Thnks fr th Mmrs” by Fall Out Boy
“Stand Up” by Flobots
“How to Save A Life” by The Fray (For a character who shall remain nameless)
“Live and Let Die” by Guns n Roses
“Megalomaniac” by Incubus
Each of the songs that I mentioned below are ones that immediately made me think of either the series as a whole or a specific character. Some of the characters. Honestly, putting together this list filled me with a lot of emotions. I found myself desperately wanting to read the entire trilogy again.
For those who want to give the playlist a listen, I’ve made it public. You can listen to it here.
What is the number one song that you would use to describe your favorite book?
For me I have read “the absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian” and I’m think the best song that could fit that book is”bang my head”by David Guetta and Sia.
I loved that book. Sherman Alexie is amazing. That’s an interesting choice, I hadn’t heard it before. It definitely fits the feel of the book.
Definitely. Im glad you find out too:)
